Sentence-level text reading with understanding and expression
listening comprehension with age appropriate narrative and informational text

THE ORTON-GILLINGHAM METHOD is a highly successful approach designed to help individuals that struggle with reading, writing, spelling, or a combination of all three. Commonly used with children diagnosed with dyslexia, Orton GIllingham's highly individualized strategies makes it ideal for individuals of all skills and ages. A typical session using this method involves action oriented techniques that use auditory, visual, sensory, and kinisthetic strategies to help assist in the reading process.
WRITING - A child must learn spelling, handwriting, and also planning, organizing, and revising ideas. I provide specialized and individualized instruction to improve the student's written skills. The following are key ingredients for proficient writing:
ideas/content
organization
vocabulary/word choice
sentence fluency
types of paragraphs
grammar
voice
I take into account the student's interests, strengths, challenges, and learning style when developing activities to enhance written language skills which could include books, including drawing and picture books, personal experiences, journals, book reports, and editing writing errors, to name a few.
HANDWRITING - Writing is used for many practical reasons in our daily lives. Being able to write clearly and legibly is an important aspect of language, literacy, and even mathematics. When a student is able to write legibly, at a good pace, he or she can organize thoughts better and create meaningful content. The handwriting process has been shown to increase ones' concentration and engagement, as well as improved memory. Because handwriting is a tactile and visual experience, it is key in a young learner's literacy acquisition.
I can help your child with:
correcting letter reversals
proper pencil grip
manuscript/print control
letter size and formation
letter and word spacing
cursive and manuscript writing
NEW YORK STATE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS TEST PREPARATION - Students in grades 3-8 take the state ELA test each spring. Some students with disabilities may take the New York State Alternative Assessment (NYSAA) in place of the state test. The ELA test is a two-day untimed test that contains several different kinds of questions. Students answer multiple choice questions based on short passages they read and write responses to open ended questions based on stories, articles, or poems they read. During my 20 year career as a teacher with the New York City Department of Education, I have provided ELA test preparation to my students, and I have been involved with the process of scoring the ELA exams.
