My name is Yvonne and I have worked with struggling readers and writers, as well as academically gifted students for almost 30 years. I am New York State certified in elementary education as well as in the visual arts for grade K through high school. I was an Academic Intervention Specialist while working for the New York City Department of Education. I reviewed and recommended reading programs that I thought were the most effective to the administration. I provided intensive instruction to at risk students in the lower grades and helped increase their reading skills significantly. I am also trained in the Orton Gillingham reading method.
With an undergraduate specialization in the visual arts and a master’s degree in education, I have applied my creativity in various instructional areas. I taught a class entitled “Literacy Through the Visual Arts” while working in an elementary school using an original curriculum I developed. I currently tutor students in the area of reading and writing online and in person locally in Brooklyn. I enjoy making learning fun and engaging with the use of games, art, and internet technology.
I earned my undergraduate degree at Cornell University and gained several years of teaching experience with the New York City Department of Education. I then earned my graduate degree in education and continued working with the Department of Education until I transitioned into the field of professional tutoring. I have extensive experience working with students with varying ability levels including those that are fulfilling IEP’s, as well as academically gifted students who want to enhance their abilities even further. I work with adults who are strengthening their basic literacy skills as well. I started tutoring online during the pandemic and I have discovered exciting ways of delivering instruction using internet technology.
I have always had a passion for teaching, and I come from a long line of educators in my family. Knowing that I am helping to boost the confidence and academic skills of children during the early years of their schooling is most fulfilling to me. Also, knowing that I am helping adults to improve their lives is deeply rewarding. With the benefits of technology and vast shared knowledge, now is the best time ever to be an educator.
